Refinishing: I’ve Had My Butcher Block Countertop for Years and I Want To Refinish It. What’s the Best Way to Make it Look New Again?

Some people love the distressed look a butcher block gets over years of use. It can add character. Other’s want to refresh the knicks and knife marks they’ve put into their blocks over the years. Good news; it’s an easy project.

Refinishing a butcher block is easy and can be done in just a few hours time. We recommend using an orbital sander. Make sure to have plenty of sandpaper on hand, as years of oil and beeswax will use up a good amount of paper. Start with a 60 grit sandpaper. This will be coarse enough to remove the larger knife marks, etc. Work your way up, sanding the entire top with each of the following grits: 60, 80, 120, 150, 180, 220. By the time you get to the 150 grit, your butcher block will be feeling very smooth. After sanding, make sure to wipe the block clean from sanding dust. Re-oil, fully saturate the butcher block. Give the block plenty of time to soak in as much food safe mineral oil as it can take. Then apply butcher block conditioner. That’s it – it will be refreshed and ready for the years to come.

We get requests to refinish butcher blocks on a regular basis. This is not a request we can accomodate. We are unable to bring used butcher blocks into contact with our tools, which are used to make new butcher blocks only.
